Mahdī Akhavān Thālith (b. 1928, in Mashhad, d. 1990, in Tehran) was an Iranian poet and critic. He published also under the pen name M. Umīd (Mīm Umīd, lit., M. Hope). Akhavān was born to a conservative family in Mashhad, where he received his elementary education. He obtained a certificate in welding from the city's technical school (hunaristān) and graduated in literature from high school. Hired as a rural school teacher by the state, he moved to Tehran in 1948 and served in the outskirts of the capital. Soon
