Ideology plays an important role in the lives of human beings in general, in the sense that it interferes with the smallest details of their lives. The concept of Ideology has been widely and variously represented in literary works through time, and a number of critical studies have analyzed these works, but none of them have put into consideration the working of ideology in Kurt Vonnegut's works, and specifically in the selected works of this thesis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ideological issues that exist in the selected works of Kurt Vonnegut and to explore how these issues have an effect on the individuality and identity of Vonnegut's fictional characters. This study can generally offer a wider view with regard to ideology to the readers of novel and short-story and disclose an efficient paradigm about the presence of ideology in the works of Vonnegut. A number of theories in relation to ideology have been surveyed in this thesis. However, some of Vonneguts short stories and novels, lend themselves very well to the Althussarian neo-Marxist theory of ideology, which elaborates on the consequences of imposed ideologies on the lives of human beings. In his works, Vonnegut offers the readers a full display of ideology and how it interpellates, hails, and subjugates the characters, turning them to machines that do whatever the state asks. The bulk of calamity is revealed when the ideology affects the characters unconsciously by positioning them as bearers of this ideology and simultaneous distributors of it without them even knowing about it. More importantly, in order to simulate the new individual, the society transforms in the same direction as well. It is worth mentioning that different sorts of resistance are organized in these stories, depending on the plot of each story. Finally in the conclusion, we can state that Vonnegut's depiction of ideology, in many ways, mirrors Althusser's theories according to which ideology adversely affects the individuality and identity of human beings and dispossesses the human intellect of voluntarily thinking and behaving.
ایدئولوژی به طور کلی نقش مهمی در زندگی انسان‌ها ایفا می‌کند، به این معنا که با کوچک‌ترین جزئیات زندگی آن‌ها تداخل می‌کند .مفهوم ایدئولوژی به طور گسترده و متنوع در آثار ادبی در طول زمان نمود یافته است و تعدادی از مطالعات انتقادی به تحلیل این آثار پرداخته‌اند، اما هیچ یک از آن‌ها کارکرد ایدئولوژی را در آثار کرت وانه گت و به طور خاص در آثار برگزیده این پایان نامه مورد توجه قرار نداده اند .هدف از این پژوهش، بررسی مسائل ایدئولوژیک موجود در آثار برگزیده کرت وانه گت و چگونگی تاثیر این مسائل بر فردیت و هویت شخصیت‌های داستانی وانه گت است .این پژوهش می‌تواند به طور کلی نگاه وسیع تری را با توجه به ایدئولوژی به خوانندگان داستان کوتاه و رمان ارائه دهد و پارادایم کارآمدی را در مورد حضور ایدئولوژی در آثار وانه گت آشکار سازد .در این پایان‌نامه تعدادی از نظریه‌های مرتبط با ایدئولوژی مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است .با این حال، برخی از داستان‌های کوتاه و رمان‌های وانه گت، خود را به نظریه ایدئولوژی نئومارکسیست آلتوسر، که پیامدهای تحمیل ایدئولوژی بر زندگی انسان را شرح می‌دهد، بسیار نزدیک می‌کنند .وانه گت در آثار خود، نمایش کاملی از ایدئولوژی را به خوانندگان عرضه می‌کند و نشان می‌دهد که چگونه هویت شخصیت‌ها را تعیین می کند، مطیع خود می‌سازد و آن‌ها را به ماشین‌هایی تبدیل می‌کند که هر کاری را که دولت می‌خواهد انجام می‌دهند .بخش عمده‌ای از فاجعه زمانی آشکار می‌شود که ایدئولوژی به طور ناخودآگاه با قرار دادن شخصیت‌ها به عنوان حاملان این ایدئولوژی و توزیع کنندگان همزمان آن، بدون آگاهی از آن، بر شخصیت‌ها تاثیر می‌گذارد .از همه مهم تر، به منظور شبیه شدن به فرد جدید، جامعه نیز در جهت مشابهی حرکت می‌کند .لازم به ذکر است که انواع مختلف مقاومت در این داستان‌ها، بسته به طرح هر داستان، سازماندهی شده است .در پایان، می توان بیان کرد که ترسیم وانه گت از ایدئولوژی، از بسیاری جهات، منعکس کننده فرضیات آلتوسری است که بر مبنای آن ایدئولوژی بر فردیت و هویت انسان تاثیر منفی می‌گذارد و عقل انسانی را از تفکر و رفتار داوطلبانه تهی می‌کند
