Mohammad Ali Jinnah (Muḥammad ʿAlī Jinnāḥ, 1876-1948) was born in Karachi into a Muslim commercial family from the Khoja sect. The eldest son of Jinnah Poonjabai, a Khoja businessman in the export trade who had migrated to Karachi from Kathiawar, Jinnah spent his early years huddled with eight other family members in a two-room flat in Wazir Mansion, a balconied three-storied structure on Newnham Road in the port city's busy commercial locality of Kharadhar.
