This thesis examines the South Asian immigration during the colonial period to two regions of Southeast Asia, Singapore and the parts of Indochina that now make up Vietnam. The thesis describes the ways South Asians immigrated, the occupations they pursued in their new homes, and the associations and structures they established in their adopted regions to provide mutual social, religious and political support. The thesis identifies characteristics the South Asian immigrant communities in Singapore and Indochina shared and those in which the two immigrant communities differed. Finally, the thesis identifies key factors that contributed to the persistence of the Indian immigrant community in Singapore and its demise in Vietnam.
