Ashugh (Ott. Turk. āşūgh ; mod. Turk. aşuğ) is a term derived from the Arabic āshiq , via the Turkish âşık (ʿāşıq , "lover"), which denotes an itinerant Armenian poet-singer who recited his works usually while accompanying himself on a traditional lute. Ashugh s often performed in languages other than Armenian. They commonly used Azerbaijani, Georgian, Kurdish, Persian, and Turkish, as well as the dialectal variants of these languages, depending on the individual bard's region of origin.
