Bhopāl is the name of a former Muslim-ruled princely state in central India. Bhopāl state existed from 1818 until 1947 and finally merged with the Indian Union in 1956. Bhopāl city was the capital of the princely state and also became the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. In 1951 the city of Bhopāl had about 151,000 inhabitants; today it has more than 1.5 million.
