ʿAlī b. Sulṭān Muḥammad al-Qārī (d. 1014/1606) was a Meccan scholar of the Ḥanafī school of law and one of the most prolific authors in Arabic during the Ottoman period. He immigrated at an unknown date from Herat and earned his living in Mecca as a freelance calligrapher. Among his teachers were Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī (d. 974/1566-7), from Egypt, and ʿAlī b. Ḥuṣām al-Dīn al-Muttaqī (d. 975/1567-8), from Gujarat, both key figures in the pietist circles of Mecca in the middle
