This article considers the recently released bilateral statement of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) on the role of Mary in the Church. As female commentators from the two communions, we explore the theology and methodology of the document, concentrating on the images it promotes of Mary and particular areas of contention for us, as feminist theologians. We contend that the Commission has not sufficiently acknowledged the problems that Mariology has, and can create, for women; nor the potential consequences of a re-reception of Marian devotion within our churches. However, we conclude by welcoming the call to pilgrimage contained in the Statement - to journey with and through Mary to a deepened faith and understanding of her son.
