This dissertation is concerned with criticizing the conventionalconcept of functional representation, and with outlining analternative concept. The conventional concept of functionalrepresentation is criticized for the theoretical inadequacy ofits constituent concept of social function, which -derivesfromapolitical and holistic assumptions. The alternative concept offunctional representation is constituted in terms of purposefulassociational action within plural societies.Part I includes a critique of neo-corporatist uses of the conceptof functional representation, exploring works by Samuel Beer,Alan Cawson, and Charles Anderson. Part II includes a critique ofvarious guild socialist uses of the concept of functionelaborated by S. G. Hobson, G. D. H. Cole, R. H. Tawney, and, inparticular, Ramiro de Maeztu. Part III outlines a model offunctional membership of a purposeful association, usingcitizenship and the state as its subjects, in the process ofwhich works by Lawrence Mead and certain English philosophicalidealists are criticized. An Appendix summarizes some uses of theconcept of function in international relations theory.
