As times change, so does the way researchers approach history and archaeology. The traditional methods of archival research and excavation are not the only approaches to take. Traditional methodologies are still important to the process of acquiring archaeological and historical data; however, there are new techniques that can be used to build a better overall picture and produce a product that the public will be better able to understand and interpret. The Mount Tabor AME Zion Church is located in Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania and is a standing log structure that dates to 1870. There are currently only a few known historical documents of this post-Civil War African American church and up until recent times church property ownership was unknown. There is an active descendant African American community around the Mount Tabor AME Zion Church that is proud of their heritage and would like to tell their story. Since little is known about the Church and its history, the research goals of this project aim to help the community give voice to their heritage. This was done through various methods, such as archival research, geophysical survey, ground excavations, 3D scanning, architectural survey, and a survey addressed to the public on their views. The outcome of this project produced a rich data set that built a better understanding of the subsurface within the project area and provided more data to support the historical significance for the Mount Tabor AME Zion Church.
